3/13/2023 0 Comments Maxel transformer reel review![]() ![]() I've found that the sweet-spot for reels this size is a 95mm handle. The newly launched Transformer F30 from MAXEL is one of the smallest reels on the market. (also, the metal T-bar on those handles is not ideal for slow jigging - very cumbersome). Just move the handle to the farthest setting for now and see how you like it. It's 115mm, which, in my opinion, is 1) too long to comfortably use the reel, and 2) may wind up damaging the gears because it's too long for the reel. I would not use that handle for the Torium. That being said, the Maxel reels are super powerful, but their drag curve sucks, in my opinion. This is why I shifted away from Japanese reels and to the Accurates - they are just more powerful and can be easily serviced in the US. The new Torium reels have essentially the same drag system as the Trinidad series - which is fine if you are using the rod to fight the fish, but may be a little light if you get a big grouper or AJ on, and you're essentially pointing and cranking. You do not need the 30 unless you're slow pitching the Mariana Trench. For very deep water and heavy jigs I use the 68-4, but we're talking up to 1000ft on the bottom with 600g jigs. Anything heavier, or dealing with current, I would move up to at least the 68-3. The 68-2 will be ok if no current and for using jigs up to about 400g. You'll have more than enough line, even for a deep drop Pulley trip. The 16 will have plenty of line capacity because you're using thin line - 20 or 30lb braid. I was thinking of going with TOR30HGA but do you think i should get the TOR16HGA instead?ĭo you think it has enough stopping power for those monsters out there? But you think for the pulley ridge trip on yankee capts this would suffice for slow pitch? ![]() I am only going with this reel because thats what my budget allows for at this time. Definitely helps on making a choice, i'm thinking i might start off with the torium and try to get the extended handle for it,even though i couldn't find it on amazon. Wow man, thank you very much for the detailed response. Some have used the Ocean Master series of reels from Bass Pro, which they seem to like. There's not much in between these price points that I would recommend. I think Amazon prime has them for under $200. I would extend the handle as far as it can go. If you're going with a more budget conscious choice, the Shimano Torium 16HGA is a good option. Probably can get these for the low $400's if you look. Great reels, very smooth, but lack stopping power. In the same range as the Valiant, price wise, is the Ocea Jigger 2000. The Accurate Valiants are in the $400 range, DFS Slammers are custom made at about $550. (this includes Maxel Transformer 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, Studio Ocean Mark Blue Heaven S2T, Shimano Ocea Jigger 1500, 2000, 3000, Shimano Torsa 16N, etc etc). After trying many, many combinations, I find that these have the right balance of precision, power, line capacity and weight that works very well. Both will hold about 550 yards of Daiwa 30lb J-Braid. The Accurate Valiant 500n would be another great choice. I have many of these rods, and pair them with custom Accurate DFS Slammer 500xn reels. My immediate question is if you have the best slow pitch rod in the game - why skimp on a reel? You're fighting the fish with the reel primarily with slow pitch, so it's very important to have something reliable. 600 FS Manufacturers Forums (now merged into BOATING).1.3K Classified: Paddle Craft and Accessories.26.4K Classifieds Ads Forums (5 Forums). ![]()
